Type hours as 1.5, 1:30 or 1h 30m; totals are in decimal hours. Need to convert minutes? Use the decimal hours converter. The Excel file also opens in Google Sheets, and its totals keep adding up as you edit. Nothing you type is stored.
How to use it
- Pick weekly, every two weeks or monthly, then a start date. Monthly takes the whole calendar month around that date.
- Type your name and, if you like, your clients or projects, one per line. Each gets its own hours column. Tick the times box to log start, end and break instead.
- Type hours as 1.5, 1:30 or 1h 30m. Totals update as you type, in decimal hours. Add a rate to get an amount per day.
- Download it as an Excel or Word file (or a CSV), or print the sheet (or save it as a PDF).
Questions
- How do I make a timesheet in Excel?
- Put the dates down the first column, the hours in the next, and a Total row at the bottom with =SUM over the hours. Or build the sheet here and download it for Excel, with your dates, columns and totals already in place.
- What should a timesheet include?
- Your name, the period it covers, one row per day, the hours worked, and the client or project each hour belongs to. Add start, end and break times if whoever approves it asks for them, and a rate if you bill by the hour. If someone signs it off, print it and leave room for a signature.
- Weekly or biweekly timesheet?
- Match whoever pays or approves you. Weekly fits weekly invoices and sign-offs, and you still remember the week when you fill it in. Two weeks fits a pay run every two weeks. Monthly suits one invoice a month, if you fill it in as you go.
- How do I add up hours and minutes on a timesheet?
- Use decimal hours: 7:45 is 7.75, because 45 minutes is 0.75 of an hour. This sheet converts for you, so type 7:45 and the totals come out in decimals. For a single time, use the decimal hours converter.
- Does the file open in Excel and Google Sheets?
- Yes. The Excel file opens in both; in Google Sheets use File, Import, Upload. Hours are numbers, so Excel shows them with your region's decimal separator. The CSV is UTF-8 with a byte order mark, so accented names come through intact. Excel set to a European region may expect semicolons and put a CSV in one column; use Data, From Text/CSV and pick the comma.
- Does the Excel file have formulas?
- Yes. The Total row is =SUM over the days and each amount is hours times your rate, so the totals update when you change hours in Excel. If you add rows below the last day, stretch the =SUM to cover them. The CSV has no formulas, just the values you typed and the totals.
- How do I save the timesheet as a PDF?
- Click Print or save as PDF, then pick Save as PDF as the destination. Only the sheet prints.
- How are start, end and break times counted?
- End minus start minus the break (in minutes). An end time earlier than the start counts as after midnight, so 22:00 to 2:00 is 4 hours.
- Does this tool save what I type?
- No. The sheet lives in your browser and nothing you type is sent anywhere or stored. No account either. Close the tab and it's gone, so download or print first.
